Chapter 10

Vynn lay stretched out on his hard bunk, naked and asleep. Lestor was beside him, naked and awake. Her mind was churning through all the possible outcomes of her current situation. None of them looked particularly good for her. Either she was going to be killed by Kanaka or one of the other pirates or the Black Star was going to be destroyed by the Weippe or some other military starship. If she ever got away from Vynn and his crew she was facing court martial from the Fleet and a lifetime in prison.

Captain Vance probably assumed she was a renegade and as such he no doubt had orders to kill her or bring her into custody. Piracy in space was pretty much a death sentence for anyone, but a Fleet officer who turned her back on her own ship was an especially despicable kind of criminal. Loyalty to the Fleet and your shipmates was not just expected it was demanded from officers who served. When Vance did finally catch her he was not going to be easy on her.

She wished that she had never gone to Negram and that she had never met Vynn. How could I have known he was a pirate? I should have gone to Vance before we encountered the Star. I should have explained to him that it was all a huge misunderstanding on my part. He might have taken her side at that point, especially given their past history together. That was another issue that kept her awake. Were we ever a real item? I mean sure, we had hooked up once on leave but he had always kept me at a distance while on board the Weippe. Part of that was no doubt due to the strict fraternization policy of the Fleet, but part of it was something else, she was sure. Perhaps he really didn’t like her as much as he let on.

Vynn snuffled and rolled over to face her with his big arm around her waist. She moved his arm off of her hip bone and listened to his regular breathing against the back of her neck. Lestor rubbed the blue skin of his arm and wondered about Vynn’s blood lines. His accent reminded her of the worlds in the Ostrov system. Seven inhabited planets in one old star system, each with it’s own human settlements. They were all ethnically related but different enough to instill nationalism and tribal warfare among themselves. It was a harsh system to live in no matter which planet you were from.

Lestor pulled the blanket up around her bare shoulders and tried to rest her mind by shutting her eyes. After laying there for several more minutes she realized she was never going to be able to sleep. That’s when she heard the heavy footfalls approaching. The metal butt of a weapon tapped against the captain’s door.

Vynn stirred and sat up. “What is it?” he bellowed.

“Kanaka wants to speak to you in the engine room, Cap’n,” a timid male voice said from behind the door.
